Working for the Weekend

Day 8 – Buchanan to Blacksburg, VA – 55 miles
Day 9 – Rest Day Blacksburg, VA – 0 miles

Saturday morning cousins Jimmy and Elise drove from Raleigh, NC to Buchanan, VA to trade off riding with us, carrying our gear, and escorting us into Elise’s sister house in Blacksburg, VA.  The weather was great with no wind and with our lighter bikes we nearly averaged some 15 mph with our heavy bikes and  rolling hills into the Virgina Tech area.  Not only supporting us in spirit but provided great Support and Gear (SAG), power gels, water, Gatorade, bananas, cliff bars, and even lunch at a brew house.

Once we made it into the Blacksburg area Ann and Dan treated us as their own kids and saw that we had the most easy going and relaxing rest weekend.  We couldn’t think you more and I hope we can repay all of you for the hospitality if you ever make it out to any of our areas.

Thank You All SO MUCH!

  1. Dustin,
Your photos are superb and I am very jealous. You look so relaxed and healthy. Is you buttocks hurting from all that riding

  2. Thanks Judy, the sit bones are definitely hurting but they numb out after the first 10-15 miles or so. I am hoping they strengthen up some as we go.

  3. Such fun pix … that second photo is almost haunting. Beautiful!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience … I’ll admit to being more than a little jealous.😉

    • @Peru only real solid advice is ride because you want to and enjoy it, other then that if you can try to get a decent bike so that the weight or bike doesn’t discourage you, ride on low traffic roads with nice shoulders, and build up your mileage as you go. Most important enjoy it and have fun like a kid again!

  4. Great pictures. I ride on the flat terrain of Virginia Beach. The hills of Blacksburg would be a welcome change of pace. Thanks for sharing.

  5. amazing pictures, how can i want do the same thing, you are Working for the Weekend,I am working in weekend

  6. I used to live in BBurg, great pics! Hope you had a chance to ride through the valley. People used to always have bikes out there… thanks!

  7. Too bad you’re not coming through Georgia… would love to join you for part of the trek and provide good food/lodging! Oh well, I’ll just have to follow your trip from afar and wish I was as adventerous (and less responsiblity ladden). Feel a kinship already since you and my son have the same name and he definitely has the “what can I do next?” 15 yr old “love life” attitude. Stay safe and keep up posted. Awesome pictures, by the way!

  8. Wow! I just got back from biking from Manhattan over the bridge into deepest Brooklyn😉 and back, dodging cars, pedestrians, and skateboarders all the way … and I am SO jealous of your lovely countryside and open road! Maybe some day, when I’m up to doing more than 35 miles a day, I’ll find some friends and do this kind of trip. Enjoy!

  9. Looks like a great trip…very scenic….hmm i might have to get my ass up and get out their…..you inspired me …zman sends

  10. Already your weather looks so green and warm. We’re still trying to recover from a long hard winter here in Alberta. Nevertheless we went for a great ride, did lots along the way which I blogged today.

I am a cyclist and all my blogs are cycling-focused so I share with you the visceral feeling of achievement after ride , particularily if the ride doubles as a charity ride. Nice that you got Freshly Pressed!

    Happy tailwinds!

  11. That place looks great for riding! I’ve recently started using my bicycle for the first time in a while. The weather around here (Southern Ontario) has just started getting nice for the first time this year. We definitely also don’t have as nice of scenery as you have in VA. It looks like a nice place to be.
